Pouring Cold Water on Latest Sourcefire Rumor
The 451 Group: Inorganic Growth submits: By Brenon Daly At the tail end of last week, the market was buzzing that Sourcefire (FIRE) may be back in play. Of course, that’s not all that unusual for the Snort shop, which has seen two publicly disclosed acquisition offers in the past four years come to nothing. (Recall that Check Point Software (CHKP) failed to land Sourcefire because of vague and off-target ‘national security concerns’ in early 2006. And then, in mid-2008, Barracuda lobbed an opportunistic low-ball bid for Sourcefire. Talks between the two sides never really got going, according to at least one source.) Complete Story »

Putting a Dollar Value on Buzz
Andy Beal submits:
Generating buzz—getting people talking about our products or even advertising on their own—is the goal of many ad campaigns today, even television commercials. (Case in point: the Super Bowl.) Online, buzz seems to be the Holy Grail: going viral, getting evangelists, having people talking/Tweeting/friending/following you. But assigning a value to that can be hard. We’re driven to assign an ROI to social media, but we’re having a hard enough time even monitoring success. General Sentiment, a sentiment analysis company, has come to the rescue. Using media prices, they’re looking to answer the question “How much would it have cost to attract the same media exposure through traditional advertising?” And they’re putting a $ sign in front of it. The Tough Choice Facing SAP's New Leaders: How to Cut Costs
As a rule, it's a good sign when a struggling company invests for the long term, emphasizing research and development over cost-cutting, and customers over Wall Street. SAP, the giant German software company that replaced its CEO in a management shakeup over the weekend, seems to be veering down that sensible path.
In SAP's case, however, a hard look at costs might be unavoidable. Expenses are way out of line compared to those of rivals such as Microsoft ( MSFT) and Google ( GOOG) Continue reading The Tough Choice Facing SAP's New Leaders: How to Cut Costs
