The Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation recently added another order of business to its growing list of projects designed to provide vision, hearing and health assistance to Oregon residents. OLSHF Development Director Nick Mandarano has launched the Foundation's PRIDE program, a new recurring giving plan through which practitioners can donate a portion of their procedures to OLSHF. Portland LASIK and photorefractive keratectomy specialists, NW Cornea Institute, is officially the Foundation's first partner in its latest outreach efforts.

"Our vision is to play an active role in the health of those in our area without access to much-needed care," said Mandarano," and the PRIDE program is the most recent step in this ongoing mission. We've helped transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of people across the state and are excited about further serving members of our community with this new agenda as well as others moving forward."

Visual impairment now affects 285 million people globally according to reports from the World Health Organization, with astigmatism, myopia and hyperopia being the leading causes of said issue. While an estimated 80 percent of these cases can be prevented or corrected via medical intervention, approximately 90 percent of those impacted are unable to afford treatment. OLSHF acts an ambassador between care providers and individuals suffering from impaired vision, hearing and other conditions.

Based in the Legacy Good Samaritan Campus of the Devers Eye Institute, NW Cornea Institute has provided eye and vision care for more than a quarter of a century. Services offered include PRK and LASIK eye surgery, cataract treatment, advanced multifocal and accommodative intraocular lens implantation, corneal and anterior segment trauma and reconstruction surgery, dry eye care and corneal crosslinking, among others. LASIK surgery alone has improved the vision of more than 12 million candidates in the U.S. since its introduction more than 20 years ago.

"The mission of the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation falls right in line with our efforts to help improve not only patients' vision, but their quality of life," affirmed NW Cornea Institute’s Dr. Michael Straiko, "and we're proud to be the first to partner with the OLSHF in this new endeavor. Through the end of the year, we'll be donating one hundred dollars to the PRIDE program for each LASIK procedure we perform. We look forward to supporting this cause and helping more people see the world in an entirely new light."

The Oregon Lions are inviting other sight and hearing practitioners to follow in the footsteps of NW Cornea Institute. This first partnership, which will run through the end of the year, is designed to test the waters and see what kind of interest there may be from other specialists.
