Each year 2.5 million people are involved in some type of automobile accident, with 1.6 million of these accidents involving a cell phone. For several years, lawmakers have encouraged drivers to utilize the hands-free feature if using the phone was absolutely necessary.
Unfortunately, a study from 2016 showed that drivers engaging in conversations that sparked visual images were less likely to detect visual hazards than drivers not similarly distracted. These results suggested that hands-free phone usage while behind the wheel may not be as safe as once believed.

According to the research cited in the study, conversations are much more visual than many people think. While talking on the phone, people constantly create mental images, even if it is just of the person’s face. This news comes at a time when cellphone and smartphone use while on the road is at an all-time high.
