Massively multiplayer online games, or MMORPGs in short, are games that are enjoyed by vast numbers of gamers over the internet simultaneously. The game, set in an open medieval fantasy world, features a fully player-driven economy. This does not only mean that nearly all equipment, like armor and weapons, in the game are crafted by players from resources gathered by players, but also that every player action in the game has an impact. Thus, players can immerse themselves more in the world and game.
In Albion Online’s unique “You are what you wear”-system, there are no classes. The equipment a player wears defines what they can do, allowing for the total customization towards a player’s favorite playstyle at any given time. This ability to choose a playstyle extends to the huge variety of activities the game offers - be it gathering, crafting, fighting the environment, or even other players. The open world allows for plenty varied encounters and invites adventurers to explore - or to conquer territories in unique tactical group battles.
Responding to the change in gaming habits in the past decade, Albion Online (albiononline.com) pursues a cross-platform approach, allowing players on PC, Mac, Linux, Android, and, post-release, iOS to play in the same world. “People, now more than ever, play everywhere: at home, on their way to work. Albion Online is currently in a Closed Beta phase with a release slated for July 17, 2017. On the way to official launch, after which progress becomes permanent, there has recently been a huge update, which added much new content, for example the new expedition system, to the game. Participation in this Closed Beta test is possible with a Founder Pack, of which 200,000 have already been sold. The game struck a chord with gamers tired of the cookie cutter themepark MMOs that have been released in recent years. “We aim for this game to provide a top-notch gaming experience for years to come,” Wilkosz concludes.
