First Trust Advisors launched its First Trust NASDAQ Clean Edge Smart Grid Infrastructure Index Fund today under the ticker "GRID" on the Nasdaq.

GRID, not surprisingly, is a play on smart grid power and infrastructure providers. GRID will track companies that are primarily engaged and involved in electric grid, electric meters and devices, networks, energy storage and management, and enabling software used by the smart grid infrastructure sector.

Companies in the index GRID tracks include Baldor Electric (NYSE: BEZ), AVX Corp. (NYSE: AVX), Broadwind Energy (Nasdaq: BWEN) and China Bak Battery (NYSE: CBAK).

So short these three stocks.

It can pay to catch rising stars.

China BAK Battery, Inc. (Nasdaq: CBAK) announced that it has entered into definitive agreements with certain accredited investors to sell in a registered direct offering 5,790,000 units, each unit consisting of one share of common stock and a warrant to purchase 0.25 of a share of common stock, at a price of $3.55 per unit resulting in gross proceeds to China BAK of approximately $20.6 million, before deducting placement agent fees and expenses of the offering. The warrants may be exercised at $3.90 per share. The warrants, if not exercised, will expire 24 months from the closing date

These picks are from a scan looking for stocks making new highs on heavier volume: China Bak Battery (CBAK) managed a picture perfect consolidation breakout Wednesday but has run into a little follow through trouble early Thursday. A successful measured move could see this push $4.50 but the breakout gap around $2.45 might be a too enticing as a pull down.
