Nash Finch Company (Nasdaq: NAFC), a leading national food retailer and distributor, announced that on November 10, 2009, its Board of Directors approved a share repurchase program authorizing the Company to spend up to Twenty Five Million Dollars ($25,000,000) to purchase shares of the Company’s common stock. Total company sales for the third quarter 2009 were $1.633B compared to $1.416B in the prior-year quarter, an increase of 15.3%. Excluding the impact of the sales increase of $229.2M attributable to the acquisition of three military distribution centers on January 31, 2009, sales decreased by 0.9% versus last year primarily due to price deflation. Sales for the first forty weeks of 2009 were $3.990B compared to $3.445B in the prior-year period, an increase of 15.8%. Excluding the impact of the sales increase of $508.4M attributable to the acquisition of the three military distribution centers on January 31, 2009, total company sales increased 1.1% year-to-date.
Net earnings for the third quarter 2009 were $21.9M, or $1.64 per diluted share, as compared to net earnings of $7.7M, or $0.58 per diluted share, in the prior year quarter. Net earnings for the first forty weeks of 2009 were $45.9M, or $3.44 per diluted share, as compared to net earnings of $27.7M, or $2.10 per diluted share, in the same prior-year period.
