Opportunities in the Wind Energy Value Chain
After having introduced the wind energy market and established why it has such a very promising future in “Wind Energy: Now Is the Time to Invest”, we explored ways to invest in this space, from the broad industry index approach of the specialized wind ETFs (FAN) and (PWND) to the targeted method of focusing on top wind turbine manufacturers such as Vestas (VWDRY.PK) outlined in “Finding Opportunities in Wind Energy ”. For all practical purposes, this latest article could have been entitled “Investing in Wind Energy, Part 3” and it takes us to mostly unsuspected ways to invest in this vastly untapped source of renewable energy. When it comes to the selection of wind energy stocks, a look at the value chain beyond turbine manufacturers reveals what are, in our opinion, some of the best ways to play this market. With the turbine manufacturers located approximately in the middle of the value chain, we first look downstream to where the demand is coming from. Complete Story »

Bankruptcy in Wind Turbine Maker Highlights Sector Risks (GE, SI, ZOLT, OTTR, BWEN)
Wind energy is supposed to be one of the key puzzle pieces in the quest to get off the dependence of foreign energy sources. Yet a fairly disturbing story from the Daily Camera in Boulder. Colorado last night highlighted how all the federal grant money and all the alternative energy money in the world will [...]

Using Analysts as Contrarian Signals
Davy Bui submits: Investors imbue analysts with high levels of credibility at their own risk. Wall Street analysts communicate in their own cryptic language that may impersonate English but rarely means what it says. When is a buy a buy and a hold a sell? In his book, Full of Bull, former Wall Street analyst, Stephen McClellan, divulges many of the open secrets about analyst-speak that gets retail investors in trouble. This analyst double-speak is the basis for this week's screen. Analysts are often stuck upgrading or downgrading a stock after the big move in the stock has already happened. Here was the criteria for the screen: Complete Story »

2 'Babies with Bathwater' and 20 'Dogs with Fleas' Stocks for the Week
J Clinton Hill submits:At the end of each trading week, Hillbent scans the equity market for potential anomalies which exhibit extremely oversold and overbought conditions. Past observations have revealed that such candidates may experience reversal corrections to the upside or downside once the market reconfirms that their fundamentals remain solidly intact or relatively poor. From a contrarian perspective, these lists may also serve as a precursor to changes in institutional sentiment and underlying fundamentals. (The purpose of this report is not to provide specific recommendations, but instead serve as a time-saving reference tool and starting point for investment ideas as the upcoming trading week unfolds. Of course, the results generated are not always perfect and users are strongly encouraged to perform their own due diligence on these names. Note that overbought and oversold conditions are based upon proprietary algorithms and quantitative models instead of conventional technical analysis indicators. As a supplement to this report, please refer to our ETF Trends Report to determine if market direction trends support a bullish or bearish investment bias over short-term, intermediate, and long-term timeframes.) Utility Stocks Better Suited for Current Income
Dobromir Stoyanov submits:Electric, Gas and Water utilities have always been traditionally regarded as income stocks by investors. Their high current yields, and the relative stability of their distributions made them a preferred choice for investors who are seeking current income from their assets.
Utilities typically pay out a large portion of their earnings as dividends, which explains their slow dividend growth and high dividend yields. Most utilities operate as natural monopolies, which guarantees almost no competition in their specific geographic areas. It would be very costly to run two separate electrical grids, and such investment could take many decades to pay off. Thus utilities tend to generate stable earnings and revenues in any economic conditions, as people keep using water, gas and electricity in their daily lives no matter what. Complete Story »
